Athens Urban Rail Transport organized a celebration at the Ellinikon Depot for Athens Tram that re-operated 20 years ago. Athens Tram was the latest addition in the mass transportation network of Athens Area, however there is a long history regarding its operation.
Its first historic operation ended in 1960 (Athens) and in 1977 (Perama – Piraeus) and lasted one century. It started as a horse drawn Tram in 1882 and continued as a steam Tram in 1887. Finally became electric in 1908.
Twenty years ago, started to operate again in Athens. Tram’s comeback happened at the time that the City of Athens hosted the 2004 Olympic games. During these 20 years of operation the network expanded to Piraeus and 25 additional Trams now are serving the public. Nowadays the network connects the center of Athens with the Southern suburbs and the city of Piraeus.
The Tram’s 20th celebration attended Representatives from the Government and the Greek Parliament as well as from the Regional and Local Authorities. Also there were representatives from Business Partners of the Athens Urban Rail Transport.
